What is the Information Society (I/S)?

According to WikiPedia:

An Information Society is one which the creation, distribution and manipulation of information is becoming a significant economic and cultural activity. The knowledge economy is its economic counterpart whereby wealth is created through the economic exploitation of knowledge.

In order to subscribe using the online facility, you first need to create an account with the website via online registration. Once you have registered, your username and password will enable you to log in to the online subscription area.

Your user name is the email address you used when you created your I/S account. You can try entering it at the password reset portion of I/S. If the email address you enter is found, an email will be sent to the address permitting you to reset your password.

I see that I can edit all of my contact information except my email address. Why can't I edit my email address?

You are right. You cannot edit your email address. However, you can create a new account with your new email address. We will then apply your subscription privileges to your new email address. After that, you can delete your old account. Please note: make sure you are logged in under your old account first before deleting it. You can do this by viewing your account information, which will display the email address that is currently logged in.

I paid for my subscription to I/S, but I cannot access the content on-line.

I/S regrets to hear that you are having difficulties. Please visit this page to check the access rights assigned to your account. If you do not see the access rights assigned to your account (or see them but are unable to access the corresponding content), please contact us and let us know. We do apologize for the inconvenience. This can happen as a result of an internal requirement that a human party approve all financial transactions (both off- and on-line). Therefore, the off-line records contain the master list of subscriptions, and, occasionally, the corresponding on-line account is not updated in a timely manner.

Certainly. As outlined in our privacy policy, I/S will respect your contact preferences. You can indicate your contact preferences on the edit contact information portion of I/S.

I am a member of an organization that has purchased an institutional membership. How do I access the content that it has paid for?

Organizations with institutional memberships must create an Institutional Access Code. Once it has done this, the organization must distribute its Institutional Access Code to its members. When you -- as a member of the organization -- receive the Institutional Access Code, you must log on to I/S (registration is free) and enter this information on the Affiliate with Institution portion of I/S. You do this by selecting your organization and enter the Institutional Access Code. You can check the content you are able to access at Check Access portion of I/S. You will be able to access your organizations content until the organization changes its Institutional Access Code. If it chooses to change its Institutional Access Code, it must disseminate the code to its members, and the member must re-affiliate with the organization to continue accessing its I/S subscription.

I have an institutional membership. How do I enable my members to access its content?

In order for members to access content under your institutional membership, you must complete the following steps:

  1. You must be registered with I/S on-line.
  2. If you plan to avail yourself of this feature or if you purchased your subscription off-line, please notify I/S if you cannot access the area where you create an Institutional Access Code so we can grant your account appropriate access rights, including the ability to set an Institutional Access Code.
  3. When you register, you must supply either an organization name or first and last name so your members can identify you.
  4. You must also create an Institutional Access Code and disseminate that code to your members.

You can change your Institutional Access Code at any time, which will require you to disseminate the new Institutional Access Code to your members if you wish for them to continue to access I/S content under your subscription.

How do I register?

The registration process is the same, regardless of whether you are an individual or organization and regardless of your ultimate subscription status (if any). Here are the steps for registration:

How do I allow others to access my organization's institutional subscription?

Here are the steps for sharing an instititional subscription:

  1. Register with I/S (see above).
  2. Email I/S for access to the Institutional Proxy group and be patient while the I/S staff adds you to the Institutional Proxy group, if you were not added beforehand. (If you are in the group, it will be listed when you view groups to which you have access.)
  3. Enter your name or organization's name (it will appear in a dropdown for users to select when affiliating with your organization).
  4. Create an Institutional Access Code.
  5. Disseminate the Institutional Access Code to the members of your organization.

How do I affiliate with an organization with an institutional subscription?

Here are the steps for affiliating with an organization with an institutional subscription:

  1. Register with I/S (see above)
  2. Obtain the Institutional Access Code from your organization
  3. Enter the Institutional Access Code

Why can't I access certain areas of I/S?

Logging in to I/S is automated. Your Internet browser will automatically prompt you for your username (the email address you used when you registered) and password when you try to access restricted content (i.e., content that requires you to be logged in). Once you are logged in, you will not be prompted to log in again, unless you try to access an area of the website for which you do not have permission. To log out, you should exit your browser. To create a free username and password complete the registration process below.

In order to access certain content, you need to be registered with I/S and, in some cases, need to have purchased a subscription to that content or be registered as a certain type of subscriber. For example:

  • Subscribers who purchased an 'Institutional' subscription are members of the 'Institutional Proxy' group and are able to access the Set Access Code page where organizations create a password that allows their members to access I/S content free of charge.

    **You need to be a member of the 'Institutional Proxy' group, and, if you are not already logged in, you will need to enter your username (the email address you used when you registered) and your password to access this link.**

  • A person who is a member of an organization that purchased an 'Institutional' subscription can access all of the content of that organization free of charge by registering independently with I/S (i.e., creating his/her own username and password) and then entering the organizations Institutional Access Code on the Affiliate with Institution page. (There is a list of organizations with institutional subscriptions on the Affiliate with Institution page, but you need to be registered to access it.) The Institutional Access Code is a password that the registered user's organization (not I/S) created, and the registered user should contact his/her organization to receive this code (not I/S). Once entered, the registered user will be able to access all of the content available to his/her organization until the organization modifies or deletes the Institutional Access Code. At such time, the registered user should contact the organization (not I/S) to obtain the new Institutional Access Code, if he/she still wishes to access I/S content for free through the organization's subscription.

  • Subscribers who purchased a subscription to a Volume or Issue of I/S are members of the corresponding group and are able to access the corresponding Articles and Issues that are not marked for free download.
  • All registered users are able to access the Registered Users section of I/S, where you can update your contact information, view the groups to which you have access, and change your password.
